Talks for new apartments between Playhouse Square and Progressive Field are moving forward. The Cleveland City Planning commission gave approval to the 203-unit mixed-use apartment building proposed by real estate investment and development firm SomeraRoad.

The seven-story, 273,000 square-foot building is planned to have a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units in the heart of the Gateway District, sandwiched between Erie Court and Bolivar Road.

The commission had praise for the project, which will move on to schematic approval stages. “It’s a wonderful project,” said Lillian Kuri, a planning commission member. “I love this street. I think it’s under appreciated.”

Chris McCune, vice president of development at SomeraRoad, spoke about how the project fits in with SomeraRoad’s recent activity, including its neighboring office space.

“SomeraRoad acquired these properties in 2019. We recently completed a 160,000 square foot office on Bolivar Road, and we’re looking to further our investment in the great area we have here,” McCune said. “We think a high-quality mixed use residential development could be another complementary use here on Bolivar Road.”
