A New York-based real estate developer hopes to build 203 apartments in downtown Cleveland’s Gateway District, in a project that would liven up what is now a pass-through street between Playhouse Square and Progressive Field.

Plans submitted to the city by property owner SomeraRoad show apartments rising atop modest parking structures at 1060 and 1124 Bolivar Road. The images are preliminary, depicting only the boxy outlines of what ultimately would be a seven-story building.

A representative from Desmone, a Pittsburgh-based architecture firm, is scheduled to present the concept to a city design-review committee and the Cleveland City Planning Commission next week.

“The goal of the project is to contribute to the ‘live-work-play’ environment of the Gateway District and to activate the street, creating a more vibrant pedestrian experience. … The design is to respect the existing historic context of the area while introducing materials to support a modern industrial aesthetic,” the public submission reads.
