Washington University Physicians will open a 25,000-square-foot clinic at Village Square in Hazelwood, officials announced Monday.

“Our goal is to make our subspecialty care more accessible to patients closer to where they live,” Dr. Victoria Fraser, head of Washington University’s Department of Medicine, said in a statement.

Securing Washington University was a major win for the 217,000-square-foot Village Square, a once dilapidated, insolvent shopping center that is a major entry to Hazelwood where it fronts Lindbergh Boulevard and Interstate 270. The city of Hazelwood hired St. Louis-based PGAV Planners several years ago to come up with new uses for the property.

“To have Washington University, a world-renowned institution, as an anchor is a key part of the redevelopment of Village Square,” Hazelwood City Manager Matt Zimmerman said in a release.
